Paintball as an Olympic Sport?

Can it be time for the hugely popular team sport of paintball to be considered for inclusion in the Olympic Games? The International Olympic Committee announced in late 2009 that golf and rugby were being added to the schedule of sports for the 2016 games in Rio. Hearing that, many paintball enthusiasts began thinking, how do we get the Committee to consider our sport for the Games?

To answer that question, they need to take a hard look at two things: organization and support. There is no doubt that paintball is a growing sport in many parts of the world, as evidenced by the enthusiasm for the game in Australia and some South American countries. However, interest in the game does not have a significant head of steam in Asian countries. Even in the United States, the sport is formally organized by only the loosest definition of the term. World-wide organization does not exist, as there is no "international or federated" association style group to champion paint balls march into the Games.

To see what this means, you only need to look at golfs efforts to return to play under the Olympic Rings. The game was last played in the 1904 Olympic Games. True enthusiasm for the games return to the competition was not taken seriously until the millennium was nearly upon us. By this time the impact of golf fever in many Asian countries had significantly expanded international interest in and support for the game. In 2003, the International Golf Federation (IGF)came into being.

Why was the Federation important to golfs inclusion in the Games? The International Olympic Committee has a strong preference for dealing with organizations that represent global organization and support for the sport wishing to become part of the Games. Golf icons like Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam became "Federation Ambassadors" and shared the enthusiasm that U.S., European, and Asian professional golfers have for the chance to win a gold medal. This kind of support had a significant impact on the IOC.

If paintball players want to get serious consideration for their game's participation in future Olympics, the sport of golf has provided a blueprint for the effort. Right now the sport does not have the organizational unity to get agreement on rules for speedball play vs. field play. If golf can work out match play vs. stroke play, there is a map to follow to successful agreements.

As you can see, support and organization are of critical importance to the effort for Olympic inclusion. Maybe more important are dedication and patience. Those who begin organizing efforts now, will very likely have moved on or passed on, by the time the IOC might undertake serious consideration of paintball as an international team sport. However, success will not come until those who dream today have seen the organization, dedication, support and investment through so there can be future winners of paintball gold in the Olympic Games.

Selecting a Hunting Crossbow

Crossbow hunting has the excitement of traditional bow hunting, without the strain associated with repeatedly firing a traditional upright bow. With a cocking device (a device to load the bow), even children or older hunters can enjoy a full day of bow hunting. There are a wide variety of crossbows available these days, and choosing the right hunting crossbow may initially seem like a daunting task. This article will lay out some of the most common features of modern crossbows, their pros and cons, and what the right hunting crossbow is for a given situation.

The main consideration when choosing a crossbow is going to be the draw weight. The draw weight determines the speed and power released when the bow is fired. When it comes to crossbows, the rule of thumb is that you'll want the draw weight to be about double the draw weight of a traditional upright bow. So, for example, if the game you are hunting traditionally requires a 75 pound upright bow, you should look towards a 150 pound hunting crossbow, which is ideal for deer hunting. Hunting crossbows have a minimum draw weight of 125 pounds, so small game hunters should be able to find a crossbow that meets their needs as well.

Like upright bows, hunting crossbows come in both recurve and compound style. Compound limbs for crossbows can either be solid or split, and provide for greater accuracy and efficiency. Quality can be an issue, however, as cheaper split compound crossbows may not always be satisfactory.

The sights on the crossbow should be the next consideration. Modern crossbows offer traditional scopes like those you would find on a rifle, as well as peep sights or red dot sights. Red dot sights are excellent for low-light environments, so if you are doing some early morning or dusk hunting, then red dot sights are the way to go.

Finally, in selecting your hunting crossbow, cost is also going to be a big consideration. The highest quality bows can cost a thousand dollars or more, but you need not spend that much in order to find a good hunting crossbow. Many shops, as well as stores on the Internet, have quality crossbows available for four hundred dollars or less. While purchasing on-line is a great option, it's recommended that you try out a few crossbows at a local store. So get out there, try a few hunting crossbows, and find the one (or two!) that are right for you.

All Aboard Model Trains

http://6c2c62e0gwg14ve0o2kgw1-6s6.hop.clickbank.net/Model trains are a hobby that can provide a lifetime of fun and excitement for people of any age! But talking about model trains is like talking about people. They come in every shape, size, color, cost, and for any use you can imagine.

One of the main distinctions between model trains is their gauge. While the gauge of a model train can be used to translate roughly to the size of the model, it really has to do with the size of the rail the model is made to travel on. More specifically, the gauge refers to the distance between the two main rails, in scale, that the train travels on. There are many different gauge designations. Some of them, from smallest to largest, include: Z, N, HO, O, and G. For instance, a Z-scale train set, including the rails, trains, cars and even landscaping can be made to fit in a briefcase! A G scale model train is often seen in outdoor displays at places like arboretums and seasonal displays. In fact, a Z-scale model train engine can be so small that a Z-scale engine can sometimes actually fit in the funnel (smokestack) of a G-scale engine!

So when choosing a scale while becoming involved in the model train hobby, it is important to know how much space you will have available to build your layouts.

Another factor that is critical to consider when starting out in the model train hobby is whether your trains will be used as toys or as a serious hobby. Since model trains come in all price ranges, knowing how the trains will be used and overpaying or underpaying will not be a problem. This may seem like a off beat concept but the reality is that since the price, quality and value of different model trains varies so greatly, it is easy to make a mistake. You don't want to purchase a detailed ptototypical engine model with exacting detail and costing hundreds or thousands of dollars for a young child or even someone just starting out in the hobby. It is best to get equipment that fits the application.

For instance, when buying a train set for a young child, one can visit a local toy store and find a nice selection and variety of train sets built specifically for children. Give one of these sets to a serious model train hobbyist, and it could provide much less appreciation. In the second instance, you may want to visit a local shop that specializes in model trains and seek some direction. You could also research on the Internet as there are literally hundreds of sites dedicated to this great hobby.

Be warned, though. Model trains are a hobby that is extremely addictive! It can provide valuable lessons in everything from model building to Geometry to Physics and beyond. But most of all a model train hobby can provide a lifetime of fun!

The Fight for Exotic Pets

Gone are the days when the word "pet" usually meant having a dog, a cat, a parrot or a fish. These days, pets also come in the form of snakes, spiders, crocodiles, wolves, bears and animals we used to see only in zoos or on TV. The modern world is also the world of pet owners who prefer the exotic from the typical domesticated creatures of yore.

Although in some countries, keeping exotic pets is not much of an issue, in the United States, it has become a topic for debate. Presently, there are more than thirty states that have laws regarding exotic pets. These laws are, of course, meant to either regulate or prohibit the keeping of some exotic pets. As expected, these laws have either been praised or deemed unjust.

Basically, those who support legislation on exotic pets feel that people have no natural right to be keepers and caregivers of exotic pets. They say that by nature, exotic pets belong to the wild and should be kept there or in some wildlife preserve where they may at least live lives that resemble the wild. For them, exotic pets have no place in the urban jungle.

Of course, the primary reasons why they seek to return these exotics into the wild is because they believe that these pets may not be able to fare well in environments that are not wild. They are also of the opinion that certain exotic pets may endanger pet owners and people in general. It is not something new to hear news of a pet owner who has been bitten by a snake or strangled by a boa. Some say that this may not be the fault of the pets because exotic animals tend to function according to their nature, a nature which many thinks is only fit for the wild. For many who wish to exclusively keep exotic animals in the wild, it is their opinion that it is a great cruelty to keep animals away from their natural homes.

On the other side of the argument, exotic pet owners argue that there is hardly any room for wild environments in the modern world and that some exotic pets are in danger of becoming extinct. They, therefore, believe that the only way to propagate and care for these animals is to allow them to be taken care of by pet owners.

When faced with the counter argument of keeping exotic animals in zoos or wildlife preserves, pet owners contend that not many people have the same dedication and knowledge in caring for exotic pets as pet owners. They have cited cases of sick exotic animals being subjected to euthanasia because public animal caregivers do not know what to do with sick exotic animals.

What pet owners suggest is to intensify the education of fellow pet owners and people in general. They feel that legislation is not the answer but education.

It would be vastly convenient for all of us if there were some way to clearly communicate with these exotic animals. As matters stand however, it is nearly impossible to know if they prefer to be in the wild or in the care of their devoted pet owners. Their future therefore, lies in the hands of whoever among the warring kings of the urban jungle wins the right to determine where they belong.

Are You a Casual Golfer

While there has never been a survey of golfers to determine what percentage of golfers could be considered casual golfers, it has to be at least 50%. Why is that true?

A casual golfer is a person who golfs strictly for the fun of it. That doesn't mean that the casual golfer doesn't try to improve. Much to the contrary, they thrive on the great golf shots they make, hoping that they might make more great shots on a more consistent basis.

They may have a desire to improve to the point where they might compete on some level--perhaps company tournaments or even club tournaments. However, they completely enjoy golfing without competing. They might compete with themselves but seldom against other people.

Casual golf could be considered and subset of recreational golf. It is the lower skill levels of recreational golf.

While there is no official designation for casual golf, the following characteristics of casual golf certainly sets casual golfers apart from recreational golfers.

1. Casual golfers often don't bother keeping score. If they do they seldom compare their scores with other times they've golfed on the same course. Most of the time they throw away the score card.

(Note: If they do have a great round, they keep the score card hoping that some day they might challenge that score.)

2. When they shank a shot, they take another shot and don't bother counting the shanked shot. And, if they're not keeping score, that don't even think about it. Particularly if there is no one behind them that they will hold up because they take an extra shot.

3. Casual golfers don't worry about whether their equipment is legal according to the USGA. They might even use collapsible and/or adjustable clubs such as the Divnick irons.

4. Casual golfers even play two or three or even four golf balls around the course when no one is behind them. They will play courses that have little traffic or at time when few other golfers are out on the course--such as in bad weather.

5. Casual golfers are heretics. They don't worry much about the USGA rules--within reason. (They don't hit the golf ball with a baseball bat or throw the golf ball around the course. They still use golf clubs and regular golf balls.) They might use tees on the fairway or in the rough so they can get a better shot at the ball.

They might improve their lies once in a while. They don't worry if their golf ball moves while addressing the ball.

We hear so much about playing by the rules--and golfers should if they are competing. However, if you're out just to have fun, and brag about an occasional great shot, then why worry about the rules.

Go out on the golf course to have fun and enjoy the scenery and fresh air!

Composting Is Good For the Soil And Good For The Soul

Gardening is a cherished past time and a productive activity, of that there is no doubt. Unfortunately, most gardeners are not toiling under the best of soil conditions.

Specifically, our soil is usually not in the most optimal condition. The prohibitive truth is that most soils have some underlying negative condition including nutritional deficiencies, excessive clay or sand, poor drainage quality, inadequate soil structure and aeration, and pH imbalance issues.

Fortunately, there is a fairly simple solution, only requiring a reasonable commitment on your part. It's known as composting and it involves the gathering of organic material that you've "created" and then periodically working these into your soil.

Controlled Rotting And Regular Rotation

Composting is essentially a process of controlled rotting where organic matter is gathered over time and left to decompose into an extremely beneficial soil conditioner that adds fertility and enhances soil structure.

The key to effective composting is to foster soil dwelling micro-organisms like fungi, bacteria, and also worms and insects that accumulate and then "treat" the debris you've stock piled. This activity will become readily apparent in time as your "pile" will begin to emanate an odor and even steam as you toss it around.

By consistently turning the decomposing material, it will break down into the some of best soil additive you can have. The composting process will take anywhere from several weeks to a couple years depending on the amount provided and the attention given.

Some Tips To Help Your Compost Decompose

There are some essentials to help it along. First off, composting requires heat so the sunnier, or less cool, the spot the better. Regardless of the spot, it must be accessible to water as pile moisture is another requirement of effective composting.

Another aspect is the size of the area or bin. While there is flexibility in this regard, do not pile it much higher than five feet as the sheer weight of the material will make it difficult to toss and turn adequately. Additionally, decomposition can slow while odors can increase under these circumstances. The ideal size is about a four-by-four square foot area, two to three feet in depth.

The compost matter needs oxygen to decompose so the pile should be rotated using a shovel and rake every few days to a week. Also, maintain moisture, but not sogginess, with a regular spritzing of water. Put gravel on the bottom to facilitate drainage, if necessary. Your compost should have the consistency of a squeezed wet sponge.

Another good idea is to shred materials like leaves and small branches before adding them to your compost. The decaying organisms work better on smaller materials comprising a lot of surface area.

When To Add Your Compost To Your Garden

The general rule of thumb for applying your compost is to add four to six inches four months before planting, two to three inches if you plant in the next two months and just one inch if you plant any sooner.

The decayed matter takes some time to fully integrate into the planting bed but the more decayed the matter, the quicker the beneficial effects. Also, when doing so, make sure to avoid large chunks that can cause air pockets to form in the soil.

Use A Variety Of Materials For Your Compost

To provide the greatest range of nutrients make your compost from a variety of materials but absolutely exclude diseased or pest infested plant matter, meat scraps, weed roots, and oils and fats.

Recommended items include coffee grounds, egg shells, fruit and vegetable scraps, grass clippings, shredded paper, shredded leaves and plant clippings, sawdust, and fireplace ashes.

Types Of Composting Containers

Composting bins can be store-bought or home-made. When going with the factory made offerings consider the barrel-shaped types that can be rotated by turning a crank. This turning action can vastly increase the rate of decay. If going the home made route, simple fencing materials or cinder blocks can be used to form a relatively large composting area.

Regardless of how you go about it, composting is likely the best continuing practice that a gardener can undertake. It amends the soil like nothing else will, giving you a bountiful vegetable harvest and blooming flowers and herbs.

Goldfish They Aren't What You Think

If you think of a tiny fish swimming happily in a bowl when you think about goldfish, then there is a lot about these fish that might surprise you. For instance, goldfish in the wild grow very large. When they are in a large body of water they could reach 2-feet long and weigh seven to nine pounds. And depending on their exposure to the sun, they could lose that golden color almost completely.

They are part of the carp family and look like a carp when fully grown, aside from their yellowish color. The small goldfish we are all used to seeing only stay small because they are confined to such a small space.

Types of Goldfish

There are also several varieties of goldfish, many of them look different compared to the common aquarium goldfish. Two general types are flat-bodied and more round-bodied or egg-shaped. The flat-bodied varieties are suitable for aquariums and outdoor ponds, and tend to be hardier than round-bodied types which should only be kept indoors.

Some varieties are black or white rather than gold or yellow. Many of the popular varieties found in pet stores today are the result of careful breeding over many years.

Some of these include:
* The Ranchu, or hooded goldfish, a Japanese variety
* The Shubunkin, another Japanese variety that is red and black with a spotted appearance
* The Fantail, known for having a longer, more flowing tail than other varieties
* The Ryukin, which has a short body and a hump behind its head
* The Comet, which is short and thin with a forked tail
* The Bubble Eye, which has huge, bubble eyes with sacs below them
* The Dragon Eye, which has protruding eyes
* The Panda Moor, which has protruding eyes but is a striking black and white instead of gold
* The Black Moor, which has protruding eyes and a black body

Goldfish Care

Goldfish are cold water fish so they can do well in unheated aquariums and ponds while there aren't any drastic temperature changes. New water for an aquarium should be allowed to reach room temperature before being added. Water that is too cold, which is anything lower than about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, can harm or kill the goldfish.

The water should be aerated with a pump. Goldfish bowls are actually very bad for fish. The water needs to be changed almost daily to maintain a healthy atmosphere, and that means putting the fish through the shock of a complete water change far too often. Also, only filtered water should be used.

Chlorinated water is not healthy for goldfish, so water directly from the tap could be hazardous. You can add special chemicals found in pet stores to tap water to de-chlorinate the water or let it sit in an open contain for at least 24 hours so the chlorine can dissipate. Other chemicals may be present in tap water, however, so a supply of filtered water for you goldfish aquarium is best.

Flake food is ideal for goldfish and will often help keep an aquarium cleaner than pellet food. You can also occasionally offer treats like mosquito larvae or peas. A tiny sprinkling each day is enough for goldfish. Give them only enough that they can completely eat within a few minutes.

With proper care, goldfish have been known to live up to ten years.

Learning To Play The Piano - Your Five Step Checklist

If you've always admired people who can play the piano and always had a secret longing to do it yourself, well you can. It's never too late.

You may never be able to rival the best of the best as a pianist, but anybody with the real desire to play will be able to indulge their passion to some level that will satisfy them. All it needs is an appropriate time commitment and the determination to keep at it.

Here's a handy checklist of five key ingredients to keep in mind as you endeavor to master this beautiful instrument:

1) Make sure you have access to your own piano or keyboard. You need to be able to practice whenever you want to and are able to. Restricting yourself to your teacher's piano at the weekly lesson, isn't going to be good enough. The piano is not an easy instrument to learn so ideally you should aim to practice for at least 30 minutes every day. You can't do this if you don't have easy access to an instrument. An electronic keyboard - ideally with at least 61 keys - will be ok if you can't get a real piano. All of the synthesizer-type keyboards will usually have at least one pretty good piano emulation setting.

2) You're going to need some form of tuition. In an ideal world you will have a personal piano teacher who is able to coach you in the style of music you wish to play. If this isn't possible, there are plenty of excellent multimedia tuition materials available these days such as books with accompanying CDs and DVDs and even interactive computer software.

3) Seek out advice from people who've gone there before you. Try to go along to piano recitals etc. in your local area and endeavor to speak to the performers and ask them for any tips and tricks that helped them along the way. This is not as daunting as it may seem because you'll generally find musicians to be a friendly bunch who are only too pleased when someone shows a real interest in what they do and they'll usually be only too happy to offer what advice they can.

4) Practice, practice, practice. Practice for as long and often as you can. Repetition is the prelude to being able to play well without even thinking about it. There really is no substitute for regular practice.

5) Don't overstretch yourself to begin with. At whatever stage you're at with your playing, don't try to tackle a piece of music that is totally beyond you. It is vitally important that you maintain your interest and enthusiasm and nothing is guaranteed to dampen this more than totally over-stretching yourself and becoming frustrated as a result. Make sure that you build up the difficulty levels on a gradual basis.

There you have it. Five key things to keep in mind as you learn to play piano. Playing a musical instrument is a wonderful skill to possess so make sure to keep at it.

Learn to play the piano tonight!

Avatar Movie Sends a Message

Don't you just love the Avatar movie? Wasn't seeing it the biggest 3-D screen viewing experience of a lifetime? Of course you've seen it, having grossed more than $1 billion in less than three weeks of being released. Written and directed by James Cameron, no movie has ever grossed more money other than his film Titanic.

The Avatar story takes place on a far away moon called Pandora. Pandora is such a beautiful place that after the exhilaration felt in the theater, regular life seems drab in comparison. Yes, this world is not like lush Pandora. That realization of hard reality is making people depressed because they know our world is lacking. And ain't it the truth!

"Most of us have become Ecozombies, desensitized, environmental deadheads. On average, society conditions us to spend over 95% of our time and 99.9% of our thinking disconnected from nature. Nature's extreme absence in our lives leaves us abandoned and wanting. We feel we never have enough. We greedily, destructively, consume and, can't stop. Nature's loss in our psyche produces a hurt, hungering, void within us that bullies us into our dilemmas." -- Michael J. Cohen

The movie is about the All-Mother and the religion of Nature. Where has it gone? It was once all there is, but alien ideas of separation, artificiality, and domination have done their darnedest to try and wipe it out. Thing is, even though the religion has been suppressed, Nature still rules. Nature is still both the universe and the cause of it. Our ancient ancestors saw that, and modern scientists through keen methods of observation are rediscovering it.

"Nature is the unseen intelligence that loved us into being." -- Elbert Hubbard

When you commune with pure nature, you just know things, because everything is connected. Without grounded contact with that source of all life, our understanding of its mysteries gets replaced by ignorance, doubt, superstition, blind faith, fanaticism, and tyranny. Our Earth and everything grown from it is no longer seen as living and feeling. They get considered as things. Things to conquer, own, dominate... and through this attitude they get destroyed.

"Man talks of battle with Nature, forgetting that if he won the battle, he would find himself on the losing side." -- economist Fritz Schumacher

In the movie you heard a whole room full of people laugh at the Deity depended upon by the residents of Pandora. That Deity encompassed the whole planet. Today people dismiss Earth religion because they look to the sky and say their Deity is beyond. BUT THE SKY IS NATURE TOO! There is no getting away from Oneness. Why separate yourself and deny the relation of everything? Is it to say you are different from everyone else? Better than anyone else? Well, just like the sky people in the movie, look what happens when you do that!

"The major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think." -- Gregory Bateson

We have a deep bond with nature and all living beings. Maybe by cultivating this awareness and letting it move us in love, our planet can once more become a paradise. Today we are seeing a growing respect for others and the earth we live on. Seeing images of Pandora in the movie evokes something we have lost and makes us feel home sick. The story of Avatar brings up an archetype of our interconnectedness. That is from where beauty flows. Notice how beauty tends to absorb us into its clarity. The closer you get in appreciation of nature, the more beauty you perceive.

"We have repressed far more than our sexuality: our very organic nature is now unconscious to most of us, most of the time, and we have become shrunken into two dimensional social or cultural beings, aware of only five of the hundreds of senses that link us to the rich biological nature that underlies and nourishes these more symbolic and recent aspects of ourselves." -- Norman O. Brown

The message of the movie is that we need to re-align with nature in a religion of harmony because we are all ONE. We are all children of nature, children of the Great Mother. Everyone and everything should be accepted and respected no matter how seemingly different they are from you. You may have once been just exactly like them in a previous vehicle, body, incarnation, or avatar if you will. It is Nature's way of balance. She does not take sides, is not for or against anyone.

"I believe in God, only I spell it Nature." -- Frank Lloyd Wright

In the Vatican's newspaper called L'Osservatore Romano, Gaetano Vallini criticizes the Avatar's aspect of "spiritualism linked to the worship of nature." Well, without links where does that leave us? DISCONNECTED! Catholic means universal and there is nothing more universal than Nature.

"For what else is Nature but God and the Divine Reason that pervades the whole universe and all its parts." -- Seneca the Younger circa 25 A.D.

Nature provides all our needs freely when not owned and exploited by Mr. Monopolizing Middleman Corporation for profit.

The story of Jesus correlates with the Avatar. He was born of the Mother, not in a fancy inn, but out close to nature among the animals. In harmony with Nature, he was able to do things like walk on water. He said we should be able to do even more than what he did, saying that we are no different from him. He often clashed with those claiming superiority through political position or dogmatic religious belief because Jesus was more aligned with the free ways of nature. It was when he got in the way of their business of making money that those powers moved to destroy him.

The very same thing happens to the Na'vi people of Pandora. The stories are totally congruent and have identical messages if you just look to see them. A scholarly investigation will reveal that Bible stories are actually derivatives of older pagan tales. The resurrection of Jesus is inexorably tied with the celebration of spring because that is what Nature does. She renews and resurrects. Just like we can do by following Her Will.

"The purpose of life is to live in agreement with nature." -- Zeno, circa 520 BC

At a ceremony where The Avatar won the Golden Globe for best drama picture and James Cameron best director, Martin Scorsese gave a Gavin Stevens quote that William Faulkner wrote for the character in his book "Requiem for a Nun" saying, "The past is never dead, it's not even past." Past, present, future, you, me, them, us... everything is interconnected, so to argue one form against another is nothing but bigotry.

Depictions of blue people are not new and worship of the Great Mother still exists in Hindu India and She is worshipped everywhere whether you know it or not. There is a book called "The Living Goddess, Reclaiming the Tradition of the Mother of the Universe" by Linda Johnsen, that quotes from a classic text called "The Mystery of The Triune Goddess." It is a scripture where the Divine Mother says, "Who and what I really am--cosmic awareness so vast I effortlessly hold trillions of universes in the palm of my hand--is beyond the capacity of human minds to understand. Therefore imagine me in whatever form appeals to you, and I promise in that very form I will come to you."

Diversity of form does not preclude oneness of spirit. So now you know, and with this knowledge have the ability to look and say, "I see you."

"One touch of nature makes the whole world kin." -- William Shakespeare circa 1580

Why We Like the Music We Do

What is music? All sounds are comprised of sound waves. What distinguishes music from other sound waves is the manner in which the sound waves vibrate and decrease from loud to soft. Dropping a metal pan on the floor presents jarring, erratic vibrations. Striking a note on a piano chord presents a softer more uniform and smooth transition from loud to soft. Obviously, a musical note is going to be much more pleasant to the ear.

There’s an old adage about how “music sooths the savage beast.” Not only is this true, it is actually an understatement. Music plays such a profound part of our lives, that we will barely scratch the surface here, but let’s give it an overview.

All of us grew up with certain songs or instrumentals that strike a chord that reverberates through our entire being. For example, when I hear “A Summer Place,” it immediately carries me back to summer months in the fifties. The experience is so profound that I can remember the feel of the sun on my face, the smell of hot dogs cooked over an open fire and the laughter of friends and family.

There is a theory that certain notes or chords resonate with a vibration that is particularly harmonious to specific people. Have you ever heard a song that gave you “goose bumps?” If so, then you give validation to this theory. When this occurs, the music has a profound affect on the subconscious. Add intense emotion to the equation and you have one powerful, indelible, blueprint on your subconscious that will follow you the rest of your life.

For example, let’s say that you receive news of the death of a loved one while a specific piece of music is playing on the radio. That particular music may have a lasting impression. Years later, for no apparent reason, you may find yourself immediately thrown into a state of depression upon hearing that same tune. The same can be true of “positive” feelings as described in the story above.

The subliminal effect of music is a proven fact. How often do you find yourself humming a fragment of a tune that you can’t identify only to discover that it’s a new “commercial” message you heard on your television. The advertising industry pays huge amounts of money to conduct research into why and how music works on the subconscious mind. This is also the reason why you see the recent trend by large companies to reconstitute classics originally performed by some of the greats of stage and screen.

Just for fun, the next time you find yourself humming a tune, try and remember when, where and under what circumstances you heard it for the very first time. The exercise will probably help you to better understand how past events have shaped your musical preferences. And, I’ll wager that the next time you hear “A Summer Place,” you will remember reading this article.
